Behind the Firewall ft. Shannon Lane

A good audit doesn’t exist to hand out gold stars.

Sometimes, the best compliment an auditor can receive is:
“You were tough on us.”

On a recent call, the project director at a client company said exactly that about Shannon Lane’s audit — and meant it as the highest praise.

They’d worked with plenty of auditors before, but Shannon’s approach was different. Where others moved quickly through the checklist, Shannon dug deeper, pushed harder, asked the questions that were uncomfortable to answer.

The depth of review surfaced gaps the team hadn’t considered. Controls they assumed were solid turned out to need work. Processes that looked good on paper didn’t hold up under scrutiny.

It wasn’t easy, but that was the point.

A good audit doesn’t exist to hand out gold stars. It exists to find what’s weak before an attacker does. Shannon’s work gave that team something more valuable than a clean report: a clearer, more honest picture of where they stood and exactly what they needed to fix.

The project director didn’t just say thank you, they said their organization came out of the process genuinely more secure. That’s what precision, partnership, and doing the hard work right actually looks like.
